After the gripping tension and emotional depth of its first two seasons, Alice
in Borderland Season 3 feels like a misstep — a rushed attempt to capitalize on the series’ success rather than expand its world meaningfully. While the previous seasons had clear stakes, compelling motives, and a psychological core that made the chaos feel purposeful, this latest installment struggles to justify its own existence. The biggest issue lies in motivation. The return to the Borderland feels forced, with the characters — especially Usagi — dragged back into the game for reasons that lack depth or authenticity. Her arc, which once carried emotional weight, now feels like a narrative device to reignite a premise that had already reached a natural conclusion. There’s little sense of discovery or evolution; instead, the story spins its wheels, relying on nostalgia rather than genuine progression. The action sequences, once a highlight of the series, are another casualty of this hurried storytelling. Instead of the grounded, visceral intensity that defined earlier seasons, Season 3 delivers moments that defy logic and physics in the worst way. The choreography often feels half-baked — not thrilling, just implausible. There’s also an undeniable echo of Squid Game throughout the season — stylistically and thematically — as if the showrunners wanted to tap into that global phenomenon. Fortunately, Alice in Borderland retains a slightly sharper narrative edge, especially in its final two episodes, which manage to restore some of the tension and emotional stakes that made the franchise compelling in the first place. But the first four episodes? They’re a slog — a bland blend of exposition and spectacle that never quite lands. Even the games, the lifeblood of the series, disappoint this time around. The much-hyped bingo game in episode four borders on parody — absurd in concept, and executed with a disregard for even the loose logic the series once maintained. The creativity and psychological nuance that once defined these challenges are largely missing, replaced by over-the-top set pieces that feel more like filler than mind games. In the end, Alice in Borderland Season 3 isn’t a total disaster — it has flickers of brilliance and a finale that nearly redeems the chaos — but it’s far from the sharp, emotionally resonant series it once was. What was once a clever, character-driven survival thriller has become a hollow imitation of itself.
