Ananthan Kaadu

political drama built around a familiar revenge story about politicians using gangsters for their own benefit. The film has a grand visual scale, and the recreation of the early 1990s is impressive, but the predictable storytelling never creates enough excitement. The screenplay also includes a subplot about the conflict between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan Army. However, this part feels like it exists mainly to connect Arya's character to the main story. Neither the Sri Lankan political backdrop nor the Kerala political events are explored with enough depth to make them emotionally or dramatically effective. Murali Gopy tries to mix socio-political conflicts with the lives of people living in the slums, but the writing remains flat. In terms of character development, only Indrans and Shanti Balakrishnan's characters leave a emotional impact. The film also includes several political references and viewpoints, but they do not add much to the story. The screenplay also tries to make Arya's character look larger than life by adding extra action scenes, but these sequences only slow down the film. The runtime starts to feel stretched, especially in the second half. The meaning behind the title Ananthan Kaadu, revealed through a character's dialogue, is interesting. The climax has a few large-scale action moments, but the journey towards it is too simple and easy to predict. Because of this, the characters who become victims of the revenge plot never get enough emotional depth. Overall, Ananthan Kaadu is an old-fashioned political gangster drama with a large-scale presentation, but its routine revenge story, predictable screenplay, and underdeveloped characters stop it from becoming an engaging crime drama.
