Angammal

We have a foul mouthed, beedi smoking , fiercely independent titular character played by a terrific Geetha Kailasam. She doesn’t depend on her kids financially and she supplies milk to her entire village. The central conflict of the film is that Angammal has never worn blouse . It could be cos of the tattoo she’s wearing but majorly it’s because she loves it that way . One of her son is a doctor and is about to be married into a rich family. He doesn’t want to lose face in front of his girl’s family so he wants his mother to wear a blouse, stop smoking and swearing. She’s okay to try it for a while but feels she’s losing her identity. I liked how layered are the characters here . They’re not bad ppl but have their own motivations . The elder son playing the nadaswaram reminded me of the mute brother from unnal mudiyum thambi . And when things get chaotic , the elder one speaks his mind so here we get to know characters as the film goes on . Geetha kailasam is such a terrific actress and she has been boxed into these mother characters without any variety but I hope she gets to play more such characters . Some parts are very funny and how the women in the film speak very openly bout breasts and I don’t think we will see that in a Tamil film for a long time .
