The first 20 minutes, where Jaskirat goes berserk looking for his sister and
vengefully murders anyone in his wake, is indeed the highest point of the movie. That, and possibly when he watches his aging mom and sister from a distance, knowing they can still smile.
From there, the film moves between greatness and mediocrity. Ranveer Singh was incredible; the complexity of a double life really tests him, and the way he breaks down and regains composure is commendable. However, the tedious nature of the film's "glazing" of Narendra Modi might make you roll your eyes. While Arjun Rampal feels a bit "nerfed," I love the detail of his abusive, "Brigadier-failure of a father, it lends so much character to his backstory.
The interval scene was strong, and while Sanjay Dutt’s demise felt anticlimactic, two subsequent scenes compensate for it. The climax stunts and action set-pieces feel a bit too over-the-top for my liking, but the BGM and songs provide incredible impetus. Aditya Dhar is skillful, but he certainly shares the accolades with the composer, Shashwat Sachdev.
Ultimately, in the absence of a "tour de force" like Akshay Khanna's Rehman Dakait, Hamza Mazhari doesn’t face a real threat. I would have loved more backstory on Jaskirat, Alam Bhai, and Jamil Sahab, but this is easily one of the best Bollywood films of the last six years. Though I preferred the first part..it was simply more cohesive and gripping.
