Jude reaches for this outdated work to relocate it to a contemporary setting, giving it new contexts, and reimagining the themes he has already accustomed us to in his work in his previous films. Gianina is a Romanian immigrant who works as a domestic helper for an upper-class French family. When she's not cleaning, or cooking, she is living her passion as an actor in an amateur student theater company, playing the main character in an adaptation of The Chambermaid's Diary. While being away from her daughter who is back in Romania. Gianina is stripped of emotions, trapped in a system she has no control over. Her financial situation forces her to leave Romania, and live in France, while constantly encounters stereotypes and false assumptions for being helper and immigrant. It's a simple, straightforward story of most immigrants but it explores the themes of class , power , capitalism and discrimination against immigrants in clever way and relies on evoking the most basic emotions in the viewer without any madness or whacky moments.
