A FILM THAT TRIPS OVER IT'S OWN AMBITION
What begins as a promising vehicle
for Shane Nigam quickly devolves into a masterclass in structural incompetence. Director Martin Joseph attempts to establish a remote, idyllic town, only to lazily bombard it with catastrophic issues the exact moment the protagonist arrives, reducing the narrative to a tired, unearned savior trope.
While Nigam and Shobi Thilakan manage to inject some genuine emotion into their scenes, the rest of the cast is relegated to mere set dressing. However, the actors can only shoulder so much blame. The core issue lies in a remarkably weak, poorly executed script. The dialogue is hollow and unnaturally focused on blindly elevating the hero, resulting in a robotic delivery that completely severs any connection with the audience.
The much-discussed climax is perhaps the film’s greatest misstep. In a desperate bid for a "mind-bending" wow factor, the narrative undergoes a bizarre, unearned tonal shift. Rather than leaving the audience in awe, it fails spectacularly and lands as unintentionally comedic.
This is incredibly frustrating because the foundation of the film is undeniably solid. To give credit where it is due, the core premise is genuinely brilliant, the cinematography beautifully captures the environment, and the musical score is excellent. Yet, a severe lack of cohesive vision and sloppy execution drag a fantastic concept straight into the mud. It is, ultimately, a massive waste of potential.
