like ‘dhrishyam’ being given sequels. it never feels like a right decision creatively and feels like a ploy to just make more money with a mediocre script. the brilliance with dhrishyam and it’s subsequent fame has everything to do with how natural the movie felt despite the kind of over-the-topness that’s common in indian thrillers. the dialogues were natural, everyone’s sympathy was with georgekutty because he was truly a common man. mohanlal is a brilliant actor no doubt and that’s where the strength lies but the first movie also had a very sturdy script and mohalal just elevated it and brought it to life. i can’t say the same about the sequel, everything feels faker, less natural. from the way mohanlal and meena look, some of the actors quite frankly don’t do a good job. this movie entirely hinges on mohanlal’s acting and i can’t quite say that it’s strong enough hold the movie together. the script is too overdramatic in a not so nice way. i do agree with sequels for the movies in the sense that there is good content that can be written about their guilt eating them alive and how they will never have peace even when their crime was justified. i do think it was mostly realistic when it came to parts that weren’t about georgekutty’s ‘cunning’. the focus on the crime shifting from varun’s awfulness to him turning into a victim while the girl and her family suffer over it because of rumors is realistic enough, the cops and their violence against someone in their custody is pretty realistic. it would be harder to be so understanding of a movie like this if the first movie wasn’t so good and beloved. while the first movie is rightfully fast paced, this movie’s quickness just felt like a forced way of raising the stakes.
