Set in Rameshwaram, the film revolves around the lives of the local fishing community, with Karunas playing Thavasi, a simple fisherman living a quiet life with his family. At the heart of the story is his daily livelihood of retrieving coins from the sea, an informal occupation followed by some locals in Rameshwaram. Through this routine, the film gradually builds towards the central events, as one seemingly ordinary day of collecting coins ends up changing Thavasi’s life. The unexpected discovery of a golden pendant turns Thavasi’s life upside down, bringing him into a difficult situation involving corruption and the misuse of power. The film explores the struggles of the powerless while keeping the drama engaging. Thavasi’s emotional journey also adds some sentiment to the story. The shift into a continuous courtroom drama is a nice addition to the screenplay, but the execution gradually becomes overdramatic. The repeated courtroom procedures, similar dialogues, and back-to-back arguments make some of these sequences feel awkward and unnecessarily stretched. The film also touches on the media’s exploitation of victims through breaking news, clickbait, and the race for TRP ratings. These ideas have potential, but the film gradually loses momentum. Even the meaning of Enna Vilai (“What is the value?”) introduced in the final act fails to deliver the intended emotional impact. Overall, Enna Vilai has a promising premise but loses momentum along the way, with its emotional impact falling short.
