Joseph Kosinski delivers a true cinematic experience once again.
You cannot get the same feel or impact watching it on a TV on your couch. The kind of movie that brings back people to the large screen communal viewing. The screenplay written by Ehren Kruger, which has good depth, is brilliantly executed by Kosinski. The dialogues and the non racing scenes are engaging and have good humour.
The cinematography by Claudio Miranda is the main boost of the film. All those race sequences are so authentic and real especially the on-board ones. It makes you feel that you're actually inside a Formula 1 car. That's just splendid! The sound design is freaking amazing with the sound of the engines revving as the cars race across. Hans Zimmer's background score works really well too. All the minute details and technical aspects of F1 are well executed.
As someone who started closely watching F1 since the 2024 season, few of the things felt quite unnatural and they could be forgiven as cinematic liberty. And a certain aspect pertaining to the problems with APXGP felt repetitive. It could've been a tighter and more engaging plot but I'm not complaining cuz this movie really is an experience.
The tributes to F1 legends of the previous generations was a nice touch. Even the real F1 drivers make small apperances. There were huge cheers in the PCX auditorium every time Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz, Fernando and the others made appearances. Even the team principals' appearances were cheered which was so enjoyable. I've to say Prasads has the best crowd always.
I've to talk about the last 20 minutes of the movie, that was just absolute freakin cinema. I was literally on the edge of the seat with goosebumps all around the body and heart racing so fast. The last 20 minutes just had the right amount of tension and stakes. It was so beautiful. Cinema at it's absolute best.
Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes was brilliant in his role, playing an aged motorsport driver who just drives for the love of pure racing. He has a certain suave and confidence about himself and the cheeky witty responses of his were really great. He brings in the emotional depth of the movie along with Javier Bardem. Brad's eyes actually speak and express how desperate he is to prove a point to the world that he is not a " has been" and the way he channels his vulnerability is so beautiful. He was the perfect choice to play Sonny
Bardem as the team owner of APXGP was great in his role. Damson Idris as the rookie and Kerry Condon as the technical director were solid in their supporting roles. A Perfect Summer blockbuster.
On the 3rd rewatch:
There's just something about the last 30 minutes of this movie that just makes me so emotionally overwhelmed! And there's always absolute silence in the theatres, people soaking in the emotions.
Kosinski's direction, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem's performances, Hans Zimmer's music, Miranda's cinematography, everything just comes together so beautifully together to create something that only can be experienced!
I'd watch the movie a million times just for these Jast 30 minutes (The whole movie is an absolute experience too)
