The Cine Column
Fantastic Four attempts a radical reinvention of Marvel’s First Family,
abandoning the bright, optimistic tone of previous adaptations in favor of a darker, more grounded science‑fiction approach infused with elements of body horror. At its best, the film offers a refreshingly unconventional take on the superhero origin story, treating its characters’ transformations not as empowering gifts but as traumatic medical afflictions that leave lasting physical and psychological scars. The first act shows genuine promise, building an atmosphere of unease and curiosity as the young protagonists grapple with the horrifying consequences of their experiment. This emphasis on fear, alienation, and loss gives the story a distinctive identity rarely seen in mainstream superhero cinema. Unfortunately, that momentum quickly unravels. The second half bears the unmistakable marks of studio interference, with abrupt time jumps, uneven pacing, and jarring tonal shifts disrupting the narrative flow. Crucial character development is skipped over, leaving the team’s eventual bond feeling rushed and emotionally unearned. The handling of Doctor Doom proves particularly disappointing. Despite being one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, he is reduced to a thinly developed antagonist whose motivations never rise above the generic. The climactic confrontation on Planet Zero is similarly underwhelming, unfolding within a murky CGI landscape that lacks tension, scale, and meaningful teamwork. By stripping away much of the warmth, humor, and familial chemistry traditionally associated with the Fantastic Four, the film often feels overly grim and emotionally distant. What should have been the story of Marvel’s most beloved superhero family instead becomes a bleak and surprisingly joyless experience. Fantastic Four ultimately stands as a fascinating example of unrealized potential. While Josh Trank’s body‑horror approach and youthful cast hint at a bold new direction, a rushed narrative, studio-mandated compromises, and an effects‑heavy finale leave Marvel’s First Family stranded in a film that never successfully reconciles its competing creative visions.

Marvel Marathon #44 The vision was amazing but the execution failed miserably.
The film's aesthetic and approach and the ideas it intended for the execution was really intriguing
