The ironic dichotomy of Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein is this: Our most
human side feels for the grotesque creature, yet our most scheming, arrogant, corrupt, and conniving ugly self agrees with our humanity. The palatial Gothic super-lab, the pools of blood, the sheets of ice, the rusted ship, the guttural screams of the Creature being shot at with a blunderbuss, and the symbolic Christ-like portrayal by Jacob Elordi all contribute to the atmosphere. The Creature's pallid, towering, semi- naked, demi- god look is strikingly reminiscent of Ridley Scott's Engineer from Prometheus, and this visual parallel is probably a subconscious choice directly connecting the film to Mary Shelley's novel's subtitle: The Modern Prometheus. The ethereal Mia Goth, wrapped in green fabric, moves about like a baroque painting. And then there is the ever-so-explosive mad scientist, Oscar Isaac, always playing the delusional god (funnily also in Ex Machina). But the real, true, and only driving force of this wholesome, haunting, immersive motion picture poetry is the man himself: Guillermo Del Toro. Nobody does it like him. The entire movie is so unlike Netflix and more like a moving canvas.
