"Life is a colour"
Mohsen Makhmalbaf's Gabbeh is a beautiful poetic tale of
dreams, desires and longing. It's a gift of colour within a beguiling work of magical realist folk romance from the hills of Iran and of tribal people of iran who live their lives with more freedom than the urban people of iran.
I think that's the political message the director wanted to give. He shows how tribal people live their lives on their own without any oppression or restrictions. They wear beautiful color dresses, they create beautiful gabbeh with their hands.
Unlike urban iranian people women who have restrictions on the way they dress, the way they behave and the way they desire or love.
He shows nomadic tribe people are more free spirited, loving and well aware people than others in iran.
And these messages are very subtle and can only be understood if you know the director works well.
Still despite political themes, it's such a beautiful film to watch.
