Ghost in the Cell

Cell begins with a mysterious and brutal atmosphere filled with blood and gore before gradually establishing its world inside a prison. The story mainly takes place within a single jail block, where we are introduced to a group of notorious criminals, gangsters, and a strict warden who keeps control over them. The film uses their daily life and interactions to build its setting and gradually shifts into a sarcastic horror comedy. The main source of comedy comes from the contrast between these dangerous criminals and their reaction to a ghost haunting their jail block. These are people who are feared outside the prison, yet they suddenly become terrified after realizing that a ghost is among them. The screenplay finds plenty of humour in their fear, their reactions, and the ridiculous ways they try to protect themselves from the ghost. The horror is presented through a gruesome and bloody style, with the ghost's attacks involving disturbing physical violence and body-horror elements. At the same time, the reactions of the prisoners are handled through slapstick comedy. Their attempts to figure out how to avoid the ghost lead to several entertaining situations, giving the film a good balance between its horror and humour. Towards the end, the writing takes a more conventional approach by revealing the purpose behind the ghost, using it to introduce some social and political commentary. With a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes, Ghost in the Cell manages to blend horror and comedy effectively within its confined prison setting. The limited location also works in the film's favour, allowing the story to move forward without relying too heavily on repetitive slapstick situations.
