The Wailing (곡성) is Terrifying, Eerie, existential, dreadful, slow burn.
I can't categorize the primal fear it touches upon through.. the ambiguity of the narrative, the less you know about what it's delving into the better.
But..the acting, score, sound design, the village, the word "atmosphere" which gets thrown around a lot when it's a horror film, but this isn't just that, it's much larger, it's world building.. Way more inexplicable, it doesn't have a form or shape.. and impeccable editing.. the helplessness the characters feel by the cosmic horror their very lives have turned into is hard to execute in cinema, in a word The Wailing is: traumatic.
