MAN OF CINEMA
"other animals live in the present, Humans cannot, So they invented hope"
Humans ability to dream, desire and hope for a better loving life, has ruined us. This movie talks about that same illusion we build for the future, regretting the past and carrying the trauma and cluelessness in what's happening in the present.
This is one of the brilliant surrealist films i have seen, which feels more personal and relevant than surrealist film. Here we see a janitor slipping into the imagination of a life which he desired to have but he never did in reality.
In the beginning, we see jessie's character keeps repeating "I'm thinking of ending things" which i believe is actually jake thinking about ending it all(which we see happen at the very end). Throughout the he imagines himself as a perfect loving boyfriend who has a beautiful intelligent gf, but in reality he is very insecure, shy and afraid of his own life.
But as the movie goes along we realise his grip on reality seeps in and his characters take on life and reality of their own. Like semi-lucid dreaming. The largest parts are his creation, even her thoughts. But he's losing his grip on her, and she begins to act more like a real woman would once in a while. Same with his mom, she's behaving as she really was, not like he imagined her to act. It is a brilliant portrait of one's delusion life and the deprivation of mental health.
Jake lived this scenario multiple times over and over l, hence you can see he has completely lost the sense of reality. What we experienced is actually what's inside his head. And never the actual reality of a sad old life of a janitor.
