MAN OF CINEMA
A tale of revenge, betrayal and despair captured in the violent and overcrowded
slums of Manila.
This Filipino revenge drama explores the life of a young girl growing up in slums ridden by poverty, oppressed by her own desires and trusts men around her who only exploit her for their lust.
Poverty is the biggest highlight of this social realist movie, its the biggest reason and root of all consequences in the movie. The movie uses it as a political theme to show the country's turmoil condition under martial law at that time.
Acc to filmmaker The opening act of slaughtering pigs is also an metaphor of oppression of the political regime. Its never really discussed in the film bluntly, but it put those hints in the form of unemployment, rapes, poverty, bad living conditions and more.
Certain times there's a bit of melodrama, but overall it's a great piece of cinema which explores lots of themes perfectly.
Its a suffering saga of a woman, who suffers along with her country.
