THE ONE has CONQUERED HIS THRONE.
First of all, I'm a hard core Suriya fan. So my opinion is just the reflection of my excitement and happiness.
After years of setbacks Suriya is back. For me, it's a perfect comeback film. A feast for fans and mass commercial action entertainer lovers.
The first half is filled with emotions, faith, God and ends with a massive interval block. Indrans' character and his daughter, played by Anagha Ravi, coming to Tamil Nadu for a medical emergency. Some unforeseen situations arise. The court is their next stop. But things are not what they expected. BK, a bad and crooked minded lawyer, stood against them. Everything is against the father and daughter. When all hope ends, Karuppusamy becomes the final hope. Suriya arrives as a guardian, the God Karuppusamy. And the game begins- God vs evil human. A cliche, template story, but what makes it extraordinary is how RJ Balaji handled it. The first half was both emotional and engaging. The interval block was highly powerful.
The second half starts slowly, and back on track with a festival song. The second half is more about fans treat. High moments, references, chase, action, fun, a complete package. But at the same time, the writing should've been done better. When the writing focused more on fan moments, the substance was lower compared to the first half. But, I think, that's what the makers really wanted. In his interviews and events, RJ Balaji continuously mentioned the second half as a mass action feast for fans. Lots of surprises. As I said before, the writing should've been done better in the second half. The climax portion changed all the fun action momentum to a deity mass avatar. There exactly where performer Suriya arrives. Really enjoyed.
DOP and Music are the backbone of the film. GK Vishnu's rich and colorful visuals and Sai Abhyankkar's peak music. GK Vishnu deserves a big applause for the excellent visuals. He knows, how to represent a STAR in a mass commercial film. And Sai; he just peaked. For me, this is his best work. Background scores in hero elevation scenes and emotional scenes and songs, everything is perfect. Outstanding work. RJ Balaji placed music perfectly. Arun Venjaramoodu deserves a big appreciation for the art works. The art department did a great job.
Coming to performances- Suriya has nothing to do in the film as an actor we saw except the climax. It's all about mass, action and fun moments. After a long time, seeing him energetic. Indrans is the ACTOR in the film. Balaji superbly used Indrans' performer side. Anagha Maya Ravi did another great work accompanying Indrans. Sshivada, Swasika, Natty Natraj, all did their job really well. Initially RJ Balaji as the antagonist was unacceptable. But later, when the film moves, it feels like it's perfectly written for him. Excellent performance. Even though all did their best, it's all about Suriya's stardom. So the film explores the STAR in an equal interval of time. Trisha's casting is unwanted. Her dubbing was terrible. No lipsync. Not only her, sometimes others too. The Lipsync issue really affected many areas. The post climax scenes could've avoided. Not worked for me.
Finally the captain of the shop, the director RJ Balaji. This is huge and really personal. When the film got postponed at the last minute, we saw him so much emotionally broken. But today, it's his day too. Director RJ Balaji. Everyone doubted him from the first day of the film announcement to moments before the release. He literally proved, all are wrong. Work hard, you'll get it. Witnessed the real 'Jersey' moment in theatre. Hats off to you man.
Overall, Karuppu is a pakka old school Tamil proper mass action commercial entertainer. If you accept Suriya as God and enter a world of illogical things, fan feast and references, Karupp may satisfy you, like me. Otherwise, it may feel like the complete opposite, a bad unbearable film experience. For me, Karuppu is completely for fans and commercial entertainer lovers. This is completely my personal opinion, everyone has different opinions.

Featuring Suriya in God-mode, #Karuppu consists of interesting ideas that are
traded for some basic fan service in the second hour, thereby making it a massy but messy watch.

Suriya needed a win.
The producer badly needed a win. More importantly, Kollywood needed a win. I'm happy that this film is being celebrated. RJ Balaji has done something only few
