Very usual backstory trope to evoke inner emotions.
The court scene was a complete stripping down of a character from its past glory and making him realise the current mood of the state. But then it switches completely into a place where even common people start to correlate with him and matches the agony of that time. It surely moved from a freedom fighter revolutionary aspect to being influenced by the left wing ideological aspect which interests for the togetherness of the common people and thus keeping a reminder of it
