Dominic Arun boldly blends Kerala’s rich folklore with a contemporary superhero
narrative, steering clear of the over‑dependence on divine tropes that dominate many recent Indian fantasy films. The world‑building is thoughtfully crafted, with every element — from Chandra’s personal history to the city’s influence on her journey — woven seamlessly into the story. While the first half takes its time establishing characters and the rules of this universe, the second half rewards viewers with well‑timed reveals and engaging action sequences.
Though it isn’t a fast‑paced fantasy epic, the film’s dedication to authenticity and emotional resonance distinguishes it from spectacle‑driven blockbusters. Kalyani Priyadarshan delivers her most nuanced performance to date — graceful, agile, and emotionally layered, balancing vulnerability with quiet strength. Credit also goes to singer‑composer Sayanora for her effective dubbing of Kalyani’s character. Naslen charms effortlessly, his natural wit making Sunny instantly endearing, while Sandy commands the screen as a formidable antagonist, exuding raw intensity. Chandu Salimkumar and Arun Kurian bring warmth and humour without disrupting the tone.
Nimish Ravi’s cinematography is rich and versatile, adapting its visual style to match the shifting moods of the narrative. Chaman Chakko’s editing keeps the action sequences sharp, while Jakes Bejoy’s music and background score enhance the atmosphere without overwhelming it. Banglan’s production design and the VFX work together to create a world that feels both believable and fantastical.
Lokah Chapter One: Chandra marks a confident and promising beginning to what could evolve into Malayalam cinema’s most ambitious fantasy universe. While not without its flaws, its fusion of myth, heart, and spectacle — anchored by Kalyani’s commanding lead performance — makes it a refreshing break from formulaic superhero storytelling. A strong opening chapter that leaves you eager for what’s to come.
