Leo John Paul, celebrated for his editing skills, attempts to weave a
non-linear mystery infused with philosophical depth. The premise is undeniably ambitious — touching on astral projection, psychic memory, and metaphysical crime-solving — but the execution falters. What begins as an intriguing setup soon spirals into a convoluted narrative, bogged down by heavy exposition and uneven pacing. As the film approaches its climax, it shifts into preachy territory, sacrificing suspense for overt social messaging. What could have been a taut, atmospheric whodunit ends up resembling a confused lecture dressed in genre clichés. Ajay Dishan makes a promising debut, embracing the quirks of his character with conviction. Vijay Antony delivers a steady performance, though he struggles to elevate the emotional stakes. The cinematography, particularly in underwater and astral sequences, is competent but lacks a cohesive visual identity. While the editing shows flashes of ingenuity, it can't rescue the bloated structure. Overused VFX often distract rather than enhance the storytelling. Maargan is a film that reaches for originality but buckles under its own weight. Despite a few inventive ideas and a committed lead, it fails to marry its supernatural ambitions with clear, compelling storytelling. The result is a thriller that feels more draining than engaging. Unless you're specifically drawn to experimental genre blends, this one’s a difficult recommendation.
