MAN OF CINEMA
Memories, love and pain don't have borders, you can't control them, you can't
separate them. Even after 70-80yrs when the horrors of partition memories kick in, all you remember is pain of the people you lost , and the love you shared with someone who is no longer there to share. All your heart wants is to go back to that place one last time to say proper goodbye to the place and people whom you had to abandon just because someone thought of drawing line and instilling hatred among eachother.
Unlike current bollywood films, this film does not talk about hindu muslim, it does not talk about hatred or patriotism. It talks about memories of suffering, struggle and connections which are forgotten in this time, all that is left is borders and two sets of people who absolutely hate each other.
That's why Imtiaz Ali chose to tell story of people who people who still carrying the same pain and love after all these years and who know the real meaning of humanity, and also witnessed the fall of humanity. And now all they need is one peaceful closure.
Imtiaz Ali perfectly executed the screenplay interchanging between two different timelines, and how he connects stories with perfect emotional weightage. My only complaint is the length of the movie, i think it could have been bit shorter. Otherwise i loved the story it tells and the search for answers.
The performances in this film what makes it a even more emotional watch, Diljeet did his job very well, but the two actors who deserve all credit are Vedang Rain, and Naseeruddin Shah. This is the best performance of Vedang's career, he brings that calm, innocence and maturity perfectly which is needed in the character. And Naseeruddin man, what a fucking legend, he made me cry on his death bed just with his dialogues and expressions. That final scene where he reads the goodbye letter, that's just absolute cinema, the pain, satisfaction and love in that small scene is immense and it really made me sob.
Glad that there are still some mainstream filmmakers who still believe in storytelling rather than selling it for propaganda or cheap attention grabs.
