I am a table tennis player myself, so this one had my attention the moment I
heard about it and wanted to watch it since then. The film follows Marty Mauser, played by Timothée Chalamet, a gifted but broke table tennis hustler from New York who wants to become the best in the world. He believes in himself completely. Whether you call it confidence or arrogance, it is magnetic. You root for him almost immediately, even though the more you get to know him, the more you realise he is also selfish, manipulative, and not particularly kind to the people around him. That tension, loving someone you probably should not, is exactly what the film is built on. Then there is Kay, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, a faded Hollywood socialite who takes an interest in Marty. You keep asking yourself what this relationship really is and what it reveals about him. Is it love? Is she using him? Is he using her? The answer is complicated in a way that adds a lot to his character. And Kay's husband? Let's just say the scenes involving him are both funny and deeply humiliating for Marty, and as the film moves forward, the humiliations keep piling up. It almost feels like he collected enemies at every stop on his journey, and they all wanted to see him lose. Here is where my table tennis brain kicked in. There is a Japanese player in the film, Koto Endo, who arrives with a racket that looks almost modern compared to what everyone else is using. If you play the sport, you will immediately notice the thickness of the rubber. This is based on something that really happened. In 1952, a Japanese player named Hiroji Satoh arrived at the World Championships with a sandwich bat, layered foam and rubber on wood, and it changed the sport forever. The film recreates this moment faithfully, and it is one of the most interesting sports history details you will see in any recent film. The match between Marty and Endo is tense in the best way. It is the first time you see Marty's confidence genuinely crack, and the way it is filmed makes it feel like something is slipping away in real time. One of the more interesting stretches of the film is watching Marty figure out how to fund his journey back to glory. There is a sequence where he goes to a sports club to make money through table tennis, and it is a masterclass in showing how sharp and resourceful he is without spelling it out. Well acted and tightly directed. There is also a wonderful stretch where the sport starts getting packaged, promoted, and corporatised. Just a montage of clips, but it is enough to make you feel what Marty feels. He went from being a man with a genuine gift to a product in someone else's advertisement. You feel the indignity of that even without it being stated. There is a moment in the film tied to the Jewish community of New York and a survivor of the Holocaust named Béla. He shares a story about finding beehives at Auschwitz and secretly sharing honey with fellow inmates. It sounds small but it is one of the most quietly devastating moments in the whole film. What is remarkable is that this story is true, based on a real table tennis champion who was an inmate at Auschwitz. It gives the film a weight that goes far beyond sport. This is not just a story about a man wanting to win. It is about a community of people who survived by their wits and refused to stop moving forward. That is ultimately what makes Marty Supreme different from every other sports film. It is a period film that feels modern, a sports film that is not really about sport, and a character study about a man you admire and cringe at in equal measure. Timothée is extraordinary throughout, but the final stretch is something else. The emotions he brings out in those closing scenes are the kind that stay with you after the credits. It is a satisfying ending, not in a clean Hollywood way, but in a real and earned way. He gives everything this role demands.
