Director Krishnadas Murali shifts gears from lighthearted family drama to
sharp, dark comedy thriller, proving his knack for subverting audience expectations. Mohiniyattam stands out as a rare sequel that not only justifies its existence but arguably surpasses the original. Transitioning from family comedy to dark thriller is a risky move, yet the writing pulls it off with remarkable confidence. The humor is darker and more situational, often finding laughter in the most horrific circumstances. The chemistry among the family members remains the film’s beating heart. Kalaranjini steals scenes as the eccentric first wife who embraces “crime life” with surprising enthusiasm. Suraj Venjaramoodu is sensational as Govindaraja, striking a perfect balance between menace and comedic timing. Vinay Forrt, as the bumbling investigating officer, delivers some of the film’s biggest laughs, while Jagadhish, Baby Jean, and Nandu Poduval also shine in standout roles. The film doesn’t shy away from satirizing irrational religious practices and the “business” of deities, adding a sharp layer of social commentary absent from the first installment. Technical contributions are equally strong—Electronic Kili’s music, Bablu Aju’s cinematography, and Shafeeque VB’s editing are all top‑notch. On the whole, Mohiniyattam is a superior sequel that trades the sentimentality of its predecessor for a rib‑tickling, cynical joyride. It’s a true ensemble piece, showcasing how a group of ordinary, flawed people can become remarkably efficient—and hilariously resourceful—when backed into a corner.
