A politically charged period drama set against the 1960s student protests over
Hindi imposition in Tamil Nadu, the film carries ambitious historical intent and impressive technical craft but falters with uneven pacing, fragmented scripting, and diluted emotional depth that keep it from fully igniting. The narrative channels the era’s fervor through protest sequences and personal stakes, while also drawing resonant parallels to contemporary struggles for linguistic pride.
Sudha Kongara captures authentic period detail with conviction, yet the screenplay suffers from a choppy flow, unnecessary romantic diversions, and cautious messaging that leans toward broad appeal rather than boldness. GV Prakash’s stirring score, Ravi K. Chandran’s evocative cinematography, and fiery dialogues deliver emotional highs—most notably in the explosive interval block. Technically accomplished and relevant for Gen Z audiences seeking awareness of Tamil history, the film nonetheless loses steam in its second half, weighed down by forced comedy, underdeveloped subplots, and formulaic storytelling.
Ultimately, it’s a work of honest intentions wrapped in a flawed package—its powerful themes make it worth a watch, but its execution leaves it middling.
