"After all, murder is - or should be - an art.
Not one of the 'seven lively', perhaps, but an art nevertheless. And, as such, the privilege of committing it should be reserved for those few who are really superior individuals." Hitchcock's Rope is certainly a standout in this crime drama genre, not because of the story. But because of its treatment. The film almost feels like live stage play, all happening in real time. I get why he wanted to make it a one shot film but couldn't do it. But he still pulled off a masterpiece which is engaging and never feels disjointed from one scene to another. Even though it is shot in a single setting between multiple rooms, film is always constantly moving with characters as they engage in conversation in a very peculiar party which buried a sinister lie. The film also acts as a great satire on social inequality and privilege of people, superior and inferior man and injustice of the poor. Only poor and inferior people should think about good or bad before acting, but privileged men can do as they want without any consequences or remorse and they will still get away. All this makes it a great philosophical and psychological thriller. Even though we know there is a dead man in the hall while the party is happening, we are not aware who he is and why he was killed. That's where Hitchcock brilliantly builds the atmosphere of suspense and suspicion unraveling each layer, and the climax is just spectacular. Rope connects a powerful ensemble of masterful craft of filmmaking and an engaging crime drama, which provides a great ride for us.
