You know that one friend who just cannot catch a break? That is Prabhendu.
The film tells you this almost immediately. He is an aspiring guitarist, an atheist born into a traditional Brahmin priest family in Kerala, and the moment he gets rejected for a visa that all his music group friends got, you feel that sting for him. The frustration on his face is real and you just want things to go right for him, even though you have barely met the guy.
What makes his character even more fun is the irony that follows. Since he needs money and his cousin Roopesh gets into an accident, Prabhendu ends up doing priestly rituals for a living, which is the exact life he ran away from. An atheist doing fake exorcisms for cash. The film is quietly laughing at this, and so will you.
Before things get interesting, let me talk about two things that make the first half genuinely enjoyable. First, Roopesh. Aju Varghese plays this character and he is just pure fun. He is warm, he is funny, and every single scene he is in gets better because of him. You will fall for him immediately.
Second, the film looks beautiful. This is a modern Malayalam film and it knows it. The oranges, the blues, the reds, and those quiet mountain shots of Kerala remind you why Malayalam cinema does this so well. The cinematography does not show off, it just feels natural.
Then Maya arrives. A ghost who does not remember who she is, but is somehow the most lively presence in the film. The way she is introduced is strange, she just appears in Prabhendu's room one night using his phone, and yet there is a warmth to her that you cannot explain. Prabhendu nicknames her "Delulu" and from here the film becomes something genuinely special.
The flight scene is a perfect example of what this film does best. It is just wholesomely funny, no dark comedy, no awkward punchlines, just clean fun that makes you smile wide. This lighter first half lets you breathe before the film slowly starts breaking your heart.
The two bond over music and it is the sweetest part of the whole film. You can see the smile come back to Prabhendu's face, a smile that was missing since the very beginning. The tune they compose together in the studio is not just a song in the film, it becomes the heart of the entire story.
But Maya does more than just make music with him. She pushes him to do something he has avoided for years, talk to his father. After his mother's death, Prabhendu and his father had drifted apart completely. Maya, who herself is carrying unresolved feelings and an unfinished story, recognises that pain in him and nudges him toward healing. The film is quietly about two people helping each other close the doors they had left open.
The confession scene is where the film genuinely earns its emotions. Maya tells Prabhendu how she feels about him, but by now Prabhendu has already fallen for Saadhya. So you are watching a ghost confess her love to someone who cannot love her back the same way, and both of them know nothing about this can ever work. It is just quietly painful, and that is what makes it the most emotional scene in the film.
The final stretch is where the film just gets you. When you see what actually happened to Maya, when her memories fully come back and Prabhendu experiences them with her, you realise you have been completely attached to this ghost this whole time.
And then the film does something beautiful with grief. You see Prabhendu's loss of his mother and Maya's family's loss of Maya sitting side by side, and the pain is the same. Both sides lost someone they loved deeply and the way they talk about them, the way they remember them, is identical. That quiet parallel is the film's most thoughtful moment.
The ending, Prabhendu visiting Maya's mother and saying yes when she asks if he was the one Maya loved, is simple, tender, and completely earned. As he walks away and feels that gentle breeze, you will feel it too.
I loved this film, and I think you will too.

Sarvam Maya doesn’t bring a fresh plot — the space feels familiar, reminding
