I wanted to be Mauled by this movie but I have to say it didn't quite put me
under duress. I loved the way it began, It made me scrunch back in my chair, bracing for the impact Sentimental Value would have on me. But, somewhere along Scandinavian dialogue and the English ones, somewhere along Stellan Skarsgards restrained performance as the absent father and the veteran arthouse, film Director.. Somewhere along Renate Reinsve's anguished portrayal of a lovelorn Daughter, coping with her Adult life as someone who had an insufferable childhood. It didn't quite hit the spot. Some Subplots felt overlooked, for instance they keep saying Stellan Skarsgard's character is a difficult person, and it does show in bits, like how he is overly flirty with Waitresses and Nurses, and how he is effortlessly charming in life, but so distant with his one daughter who reminds him most of himself, but aside from his Alcoholism, and terse praise for her, it never really came through. Renate Reinsve is in her "Worst Person in the World" form.. she is lonely, gloomy, smiling like a happy person but sad from within. But then again, it's what meets the eyes, I wish there was more.. each time she curls up on the floor in the pool of her own tears, I wish I had more insight into how she feels, why she feels neglected, which side of her needs tender loving care, what part does she think she plays in her own suffering. The Younger Sister has an uncanny resemblance to Amy Adams, i can almost see a Hollywood remake with Amy Adams and Dakota Johnson as the two sisters 😄. SPEAKING OF Dakota, Elle Fanning as the Superstar actress aching to break into an indie film, she is sincere in her approach, Elle Fanning is a phenomenal actress, the way she can cry on cue and make it look so real, is unreal. But again, She was just that. It's Joachim Trier's premise i suppose which is the real winner. A dysfunctional Father- Daughter Relationship trying to fix itself in the backdrop of performance Art. I love the moment where The Grandson is gifted a set of DVD's by Grandpa.. on his 9th birthday, movies clearly the kid shouldn't watch until he is at least 16. And there are at least 5 more moments like these which i truly enjoyed, let's just stick to this.. i don't want to say i thoroughly liked The movie for.. Sentimental Value.
