Ritual
2000 Japanese MovieDrama
A disillusioned filmmaker has an encounter with a young girl who has a ritual of repeating "Tomorrow is my birthday" everyday. He tries to communicate with her through his video camera.

MAN OF CINEMA
When reality and truth is your enemy then there is only option "escape into a
world you created for yourself" in many different ways we all do that. For me movies are something which provides an escapism from miserable reality, stress and mental peace.
But here we see an extreme case of ignoring reality, where this young girl lives everyday in the same way in her own world waiting for tomorrow hoping tomorrow will be a better day. And the film captures her melancholic, trippy and weird world so vividly. It is visually experimental, sometimes eerie and uncomfortable to watch.
And the actress is so brilliant, her character is a perfect example or case study of a person who is dealing with dual personality disorder, depression and lack of love and comfort in their life. The movie really makes you empathize with the character and makes us understand her on a deeper level.
It shows how trauma, dejection, emotional abuse, suicidal thoughts can lead to mental illness and how it really affects the person when they are on their own. It creates a repetitive cycle of living the same high and low moments again and again, and constantly refusing to accept any changes or reality.
I really feel this movie is not for those who are emotionally vulnerable or dealing with depression, because the movie carries certain triggers that will push you, it can push those buttons which you were holding off.
Then we see another character, director. Who found her while he was wandering abandoned places. He really tried hard to understand her, help her. But we clearly see a disconnect between them. The idea itself referencing that character as director is to show he is there just to film her, cant really do anything to help, all he can do is record he daily ritual. Until he makes her confront the reality at the end.
It can be a strange, or personal or emotionally distant movie to really endure and understand all the things, but it is artistically and visually a brilliant film about people like you and me who are going through so many things in life and hoping for a better tomorrow.
