Where does one's true desire and happiness come from? From the mysterious deep source(hole) inside you, submerged by a layer of fear, insecurity and shame. This film uses that notion here so brilliantly, the hole under the lake from where the slasher appears is used as a metaphor for so many things, from orgasm to embracing fear, from liberation to feeling of belonging at some place or with someone. From being a key to unlocking sexual frustration , pleasure and dissatisfaction. All this packed with wild, gore slasher Meta just feels super dope. It creates a meditation on cinephilia as the engine of desire. But this movie is not just an allegory or a meta commentary on washed up slasher IP of the industry and love of the genre, Its becomes an actual deconstruction of one personality, a movie within a movie creates surreal space where the character finds her desires, identity and what makes her truly happy, even though its fucked up. According to me this was an unravel of sexuality, identity and the celebration of feeling liberated. The film brilliantly blends reality, fantasy, desire, and self-acceptance. While keeping you captivated from start to finish by its dreamlike visual sequences and brilliant performances, especially by Gillian Anderson. It's not just an ode to lost love for the genre, but also a brilliant execution of telling a powerful story which can feel so personal and provoking and can be wild and hilarious at the same time. It's a unique gem and the start of the new mashup genre. Schoenbrun really managed to reshape the genre in a deeply personal way. She had hidden so many items in the movie like from candy , moviemaking, mastrubation, hot sauce dipping and more all are used as kinds of pleasure tools in the movie, and i just love how significant it is. This movie also reminded me of another movie in the similar space "I SAW THE TV GLOW", check out that, if you haven't.
