MAN OF CINEMA
When it comes to ray's films, the genius of Ray lay in his ability to
effortlessly blend his heavy ideological undertones, his beliefs and thoughts into his works, but the narrative on surface might feel very simple. All of Ray's work is political and discovering new underlying themes in them makes one appreciate these films more according to me. Here in this film also the film on the surface might seem like musical fantasy/comedy but it also talks about anti war themes, social and caste hierarchy systems. In that 6 and half minute ghost dance sequence, ray displays different ghosts each belongs to different caste hierarchy and depicts their conflicts and struggle and at the end of dance you will see ordinary man on top of the hierarchy, and also at the climax of the film we see that goopy and Baagha two ordinary outcasts now became prince, breaking the stereotypes/norms of society. It is also great piece anti-war, "Halla, the mad King goes to war!" The film through musicals , absurdity and comedy shows nothing comes good out of the war. Only death and pain results from the war and yet every one wants to go to war. Watching this today, in current war mongering times feels like we have forgot what is to be humans. Ray has given so masterpiece that this one feels very underrated by many. This one shoulf get more recognition i guess. Its hilarious, unique and a brilliant commentary on class divide and futility of war. He has transformed a children's story into something so significant and effective for the viewers. It still remains one of the most innovative films of all time.
