MAN OF CINEMA
A gripping French war piece which explores the harrowing realities of the
French Resistance during World War II. Based on Melville’s own wartime experiences, the film stars Lino Ventura as Philippe Gerbier, a resistance fighter navigating betrayal, secrecy, and survival under Nazi occupation.
With a slow-burning screenplay and atmospheric setting, this thriller stands apart from traditional war films. I absolutely loved the camera work, the way it plays with shadows, cinematography and haunting hollow frames.
Film doesn't fall for patriotic tropes, instead takes a stark unromantic look at the cost of resistance and aftermath with such brilliant detailing in the story, it comes out as a really unique film.
