When Jesus can fool people and form a cult which lasts for centuries then why
can't Ann Lee not form a religious cult of her own? Ann lee had to form a cult and announce herself as the second coming of christ just to provide gender equality in spirituality and to liberate women from shackles of marriage and the constant physical abuse in the name of marital sex.
It highlights the patriarchal hierarchy even in the religious system. And the fact that as of 2025 only 3 members left in this shakers cult shows how a sect cannot exist with a voice and ideology of women. Because our society is consumed by patriarchy.
Even though i do not align with anything these people believed in, But the film portrays real events with an honest approach and with beautiful and euphoric musical sequences which are eccentric to watch.
Amanda Seyfried deserves more praise and awards for her performance in this. She was absolutely captivating and stunning. It also shows the hypocrisy of these awards shows mostly run by hardcore Christians or Zionists, totally ignoring this film because of its ideology and the themes.
Ann Lee consumes the suffering and transfers it into faith, agony and into ecstasy, both in every movement and belief, she embodies a vision of worship as all consuming fire with a cry of rage, pain , devotion and defiance
