Ratnam fan. Usually, I'll defend his films even the bad ones but I can't defend this shit.
All that god-tier hype. Mani Ratnam. Kamal Haasan. A.R. Rahman. That insane cast. And for what? Some generic-ass gangster revenge plot we’ve seen a thousand times but it's trying too hard to be good.
Kamal really had the audacity to say this was better than Nayakan? Kamal really is becoming senile with his age. If he had just shut the fuck up during promotions and let the movie speak, maybe people wouldn’t have walked in expecting Godfather meets Mahabharata. But nah. He talked like it was the second coming of Tamil cinema. Instead, we got Mid Life.
And what the fuck was going on with the cheating subplot? We’re really supposed to feel bad for Kamal and Trisha breaking homes and then acting like it’s poetic? No emotional payoff. No real stakes. Just fake-deep monologues and aesthetic nonsense. I mostly feel bad for Mani but not for Kamal. Mani shouldn't accepted Kamal's offer to direct this film.
And don't get me started with Kamal's plot armour. Bro was almost killed in a gang fight in Delhi, decided to go to Nepal after barely recovered from it, got his ass kicked by his own gang, got shot 2 times, thrown out of the Himalayas, gets hit by a tree and survived a fucking avalanche just before heading to a village like bro was in Final Destination. But somehow, Simbu gets killed by Ali Fazal with a single gunshot. I guess Yama was Kamal's friend after all.
Rahman’s score slaps on its own, but inside the film? Feels out of place thanks to janky editing. Also, why the hell are half the soundtrack songs missing from the movie?? Don’t give us a fucking album if you’re not gonna use it.
Also, if I had a nickel every time Trisha plays a problematic woman that ruins a marriage in a 2025 film, I'll have 3 nickels. Which is so much and it's so weird it happened 3 times already.
