MAN OF CINEMA
MAN OF CINEMA
One murder, 4 witnesses and 4 different stories.
Kurosawa created a thrilling whodunnit mystery that became a guide book in itself for the future generation of film makers. I just love how brilliant the screenwriting is in this film, all 4 witnesses telling their own versions of story which contradicts with each other but everyone keeps their most ideal self in their own story they told. Kurosawa shows that humans in nature are selfish, self loathing, opportunistic liars. Who could even lie to themselves to live in a delusion they create. Film also questions the morality, woman dignity and her choice of freedom, and a true meaning of being a man. All these philosophical elements add so many layers to an already complex situation. This film is also exotic in nature, 3 people fighting in hot sunny weather in the middle of dense forest, and those intense unfolding events, all this captured by brilliant detailed cinematography that anyone wouldn't have seen in that age. Even small small things were so brilliantly highlighted in the camera work. The film at the ending doesn't even care to provide the truth and leaves it on audience conscience to come to conclusions based on their human traits. Rashomon is enthralling, deeply philosophical, and a brilliant treat for cine lovers.
