" Someone's Suffering is Someone's Spectacle!" Billy Wilder showcases a great
vile of human nature of greed, exploitation and Propaganda of the media. It kind of came out as a fantasy in some way, how the incident was turned into amusement for so many people driving in to see the man stuck in the cave. The whole film comes out as ruthless and cynical, but the journalists are cynical. Some Will go to any extent and do below the belt reporting just to eyes on their headlines. Kirk Douglas's character can be a great character study, he is neither protagonist nor the anti -hero, he was just a vicious headline hungry reporter who exploited that situation. And the audience doesn't even feel pity or root for him, they will just look at it with disgust on their faces. Because deep down, most of us are opportunistic and greedy. This film's theme is so relevant to this age than ever, how a media can turn a disaster into a circus with a propaganda which can only benefit them. Even though it's satire, the film has shades of noir thriller, one that really shows the exemplary of an American dream. I think it was needed to intrigue the audience who were loving this genre in those days.
