MAN OF CINEMA
I just love how the director uses folktale and fantasy elements to tell the
story of morals influenced by war, greed and selfish ambitions and how this movie actually reflects upon the actions of japanese people in world war. In such a poetic and artistic way the movie shows nothing comes good out of war and greed. A man is not one who fights or earns lots of money, a real man is the one who loves and cares for their loved ones and doesn't abandon them. The whole movie i felt was a metaphor for the japan in world war, the white ghost was the west world which japan been lusting upon and wanted to conquer, and how the war claimed many innocent lives and left so trauma for people who were left behind. But also on the other hand if you ignore the metaphor, the movie still is a great fantasy drama which talks a lot about humans and their conscience and also shows three phases of life that man goes through, ambition, greed, and self reflection. With a background score which just haunts even after the movie and a thought provoking concept, with rich storytelling and immersive Cinematography this classic folktale will always be the greatest achievement in Japanese cinema.
