This Kurosawa epic action drama is a perfect movie because of the way it represents the two totally different kinds of people of japan. Samurai who are always full of pride and ego and never serve and obey anyone other than their masters get ready to save farmers from bandits in return for nothing. And the peaceful farmers who never interfere with other sects of society and never indulge in violence had to choose violence when their existence comes into question. Kurosawa brings both of them together and unites them to fight for a cause where only the side of the team would have most benefits and the other side will have nothing but suffering and pain as we see in the last scene. When the master says they lost again, this was the victory for the farmers and samurais lost their 4 men to this war. They have lost even after winning, that's the consequence of any violence, that's what Kurosawa wanted to show here. The characters are also so very well written, each samurai has its own attributes and personality which makes each of them stand out. Of course most will love Toshiro Mifune's character Kikuchiyo, it was the most comedic yet intense character to watch. I loved him too, he was like a joker in the pack of Aces. The way battle scenes are choreographed and constructed tells the amount of thought process must have done in this. All the while the audience thought they would see the samurai sword fighting in all its glory, but the actual battle turned out to be more mind games than sword fighting. It was clever and brilliantly done. A film which is totally worth spending 3 and half hours for.
