She becomes nothing short of mute stone which people start to worship blindly and when that fanaticism fades away by harsh reality they push her into the edge of insanity and call her a witch. And all this happened to girl aged 17yr old. This film is a great example, when all of Patriarchy, fanaticism, superstition and regressive thought process come together how it suppresses women from all her rights and desires and exploits till she breakdown completely. It's a great political and social tale with contemporary style, with such a subtle hint of irony in the storyline to highlight the hypocrisy of the characters. That climax is nothing short of poetic end to soul which has endured so much and was never able to express her desires. I just love how Ray exposes hypocrisy and regressive thoughts and beliefs of society and people in such a subtle way, almost in silence and yet it hits so hard. It is yet another most beautiful film that Ray has made like so many of his movies.
