MAN OF CINEMA
The prison break movie which starts as any other film in the same genre, but
the way the movie ends, the way it is made and the characters makes this masterpiece. I just loved the detailing they showed here about the whole routine of these 5 prisoners and the planning, it is till the last bolt. It is so intricately presented that you will be amazed. The biggest protagonist of this movie is not any of the characters for me, its the camera. What a brilliant camera work this movie has, most scenes are set in compact setting like 4 walled small room, the tunnels, the underground lanes, all these were captured with brilliant frame composition, even that camera works through peephole, it looks so damn authentic, like you are the one peeping.the camera makes sure the frame is not overcrowded and chaotic even though it is, thats the effectiveness of it. Its simple & effective cinematography but comes out as beautiful work. Even though we don't get to know the backstory and reason of them being there, still all the prisoners feel very humanized, desperate and small unlike other prison films, that's why you connect to each one of them so quickly. Also most prison movies feel either desperate or full of hope. But this one feels so damn realistic till the last moment. Because humans are opportunistic and selfish especially the prisoners, and you feel that here. The brilliance of this movie hides in its simplicity and authenticity. There is no elevated music or emotions, it just feels like you are one of those corners with these 5 prisoners standing in one of the corners and watching everything unfold. The movie kind of also manipulates you, because in real world reporting the prison break would be an ideal thing to do, and when claude actually does it, you as an audience also feel betrayed, because you are so connected with those characters. It's just brilliant writing. In the end you will understand, the title Le Trou( The Hole) metaphorically meant that the hole is a dark prison room, where they probably will end up spending the rest of their lives.
