The final part of this epic human condition trilogy, this is where Kobayashi
makes his deepest impact by showcasing Kaji's engrossing, breathtaking journey to return home. Kaji is sick of war, the army and this hopeless world and now he just wants to return to his loving wife whom he had promised. But this journey is the most difficult path he has to endure. Kaji is alone and desperately trying to find some way back but his unit is starved , no food and no shelter and most of all no shred of humanity is seen as he and his unit push forward escaping from russian troops. We see his growing madness and his complete loss of self-control and dignity. But he still pushes himself as he try to walk across the snow desert all alone after losing everything but his love for his wife whose voice is constantly echoing in his mind. Its really terrifying and sad the way the movie ends. Its a movie where you will see romantic longing which is overshadowed by horrors of war and dying humanity. This whole trilogy questions conflicting ideologies , capitalism, the immorality of war, and a lack of empathy spreading among the men in their home country.
