"The best sword is kept in its sheath"
A brilliant Anti - violence film using
the characters of samurai who are most violent in nature. Throughout the film we see a bunch of samurai running around for power with their swords but we don't really see true violence. the only truly violent moment comes at the very end in the duel between Sanjuro and Hanbei. And what a jaw dropping moment was that. And still the samurai standing and witnessing that brutal moment are unable to read human nature and understand the significance of peace over violence.
The story is simple feudal drama with dry humour, but what really made this film interesting is the character of sanjuro and the underlying theme of anti-violence. Kurosawa surely knew how to make a meaningful movie even using the elements of typical action flicks but mould them in a unique way.
