MAN OF CINEMA
Even though certain themes match with his own previous film " Late Spring" ,
this film provides an outlook from the more modern and industrialized japan. The film shows even though japan has moved on from the scars of war and accepted modernization, but certain conservative thoughts and Patriarchy stays the same in people's minds and lives.
Another thing which makes this a distinct variation from late spring is how ozu captures the world outside of home. Ozu previous films most of the time stayed inside the house and focused on family characters. But here ozu showcases modern society, changing drinking culture new karaoke bars and modern bars. Office Workspace. Here outer character and events affect the decisions within the home unlike previously and also feels very melancholic in some ways. And also this was Ozu's last film he made, it makes it even special.
Its relatable, slow-burning but very moving and sharply observed family drama which gives glimpse into director ozu's evolving thoughts on life and culture in his last film.
