MAN OF CINEMA
Billy is the kind of character which can become so relevant and personal to
many viewers in their own way, it's such a beautiful and heartbreaking portrayal of a troubled childhood.
A teenage kid with a dysfunctional family, who thinks and feels different from other lots around him, hence he gets bullied, abused and trolled but Billy finds solace and friendship with a bird named Kes. This bond with the bird gives him that confidence and comfort which no one did. It's a kind of connection which is hardly showcased in cinema with such nuances and care.
The film also depicts the flaws in the British education system and discrimination in labour opportunities at that time. A kind of education system which segregated kids into different forms of schools, which created an void and system which does not take into account individual skills and label them as failures and unfit for white collar jobs.
The film also highlights the lack of care towards children's mental health and care. Billy never really got that affection from his mother and brother for which he craved. Which put lots of emotional pain on him. Billy desires comfort, support and guidance from people around him, but he receives nothing.
Kes is a movie about every child's childhood who found comfort and love in something else when his own people around him deprived him of all emotions.
