This is a great example of Delulu is the solulu! Robert de niro plays a
delusional and narcissistic amateur comedian who is only obsessed with one thing, performing on the famous talk show and he will go to any extent to achieve that because he believes " Better to be a king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime". But in reality he was stupid and foolish and full of himself. A man who was living in his own delusion. Great comedy comes out of great tragedy, and this dark comedy comes out of the tragic life of Rupert Pupkin. A man whose obsession, desire to be famous and loneliness has pushed him to the edge of cynicism. As an audience we don't understand whether to root for this foolish man's aspirations or to feel pity for him, but we eventually end up enjoying his shenanigans and shithousery. Because deep down we all have those desires that we can't achieve, but we see this man do it in the most bizarre and funny way. The film also talks about hysterical blind hero worshipping, obsession, privacy invasion and Showbiz in a very subtle way. The fact that Martin Scorsese made this with Robert De Niro after Taxi Driver, this film kind of feels an extension of that universe in a strange way. This one doesn't cross that level of creepyness or extremism, but still enough to get annoyed by the character's behaviours. I really loved the ending, because you don't know it is another fantasy of rupert or reality, just like Rupert's character fails to differentiate between his fantasies and reality in much the same way. It is one of the brilliant dark comedies.

Crazy crazy story line; you wonder whether to laugh or cry.
But as a line in the story goes; you need to know what price are you ready to pay.

One of my favourite Scorsese films with great acting by De Niro and I think it
was the best seriously made comedy film.
