MAN OF CINEMA
Hidetora was a fearless king who spent more than 50 years in war and nothing
broke him until the betrayal and banishment from his own unloving sons when he handed his kingdom to them. Kurosawa tells this epic story in magnificent and rich cinematography with wide lines, unlike his previous films where Kurosawa mostly focused on individuals with close lenses. Here with the wide lens he shows even though the world is so big and vast, but old king Hidetora feels like he came to the end of the world and he has no place to go. He loses grip on reality. So many frames in this film feel like carved straight out of some painting, such an artistic achievement. Kurosawa when finally gets a chance to tell a war epic in colors, he has gone full berserk. Like a kid who gets colors for the first time. You clearly see his visions in a much better way than in his previous films. A hard hitting emotional war movie with universal themes, filled by greatest imagery a director has ever created on screen.
