MAN OF CINEMA
A coming of age road film, that is so heartbreaking, disturbing and pure
innocence which was ruined by elders around them who lost their own innocence and humanity.
Two siblings embark on a journey from greek to germany to find their father, even though the destination is known, but the journey makes them feel the destination so ambiguous, bleak and lost. Here the journey itself acts as the destination of their wretched fate. The horrors they had to face in the most horrifying conditions both natural and man made. Yet they keep pushing themselves to reach the destination they had in mind but did they reach Germany at the end? The last scene where we see them coming out of mist gives no indication of germany, its very vague, abstract ending which just fucks us up even more knowing that the future is still uncertain as both kids runs away from us in the mist.
The whole film is filled with so many metaphors, symbols and very artistically captures the mood of the world and the characters perfectly. Most of the shots we see in the film are wide shots bringing in those big landscapes in frame, which makes these characters feel so small, like it's telling that in this dog eat dog world nobody cares about these two little kids who are ought to find their father on their own. The world will not be kind to them, it will look down upon them, hurt them, exploit them till their spirits break. These landscapes are so damn important for the film, it just terrifies even adults like us, and makes you feel amazed and baffled how these two survive in this hell.
I felt that the hand which they pulled out of the ocean was kind of the hand of god which was guiding them, there are other biblic symbols too, like the man Orestis act as angel saving them multiple times, then there is that scene where everyone like just freeze looking at snowfall and time stood still when both kids escape from the police station. There are more of these magic realism elements which makes the film very interesting.
One thing i wanted to see was why these kids were so desperately wanted to see their father and were ready to travel that far and didn't even care to go back after facing so many horrors, what happened that pushed these kids to the edge, i really wanted to know the backstory. It would have added another layer to the film.
This film reminds me of Capernaum in a way, like how people just bring kids to this hell hole and do not care about them and these pure souls have to bear the scars & trauma for life and the consequences which cannot be unturned. No matter who says what to you, think 1000 times before bringing a soul in this horrific world.

Symbolic throughout ( both Greek & Christian ) .
Surreal imagery with all the landscapes ( with mountainous / hills & sea ) & huge machineries taken in long shots .
