In one pov , we can say that that every murders were happening in his head and those were not real and he got his punishment by not being able to tell his regret of being a yuppie, an opportunist , a misogynist, a drug addict and a consumerist . " My confession never meant anything " . In another pov , we can say all are real including the killings and stuff . At the end when Patrick goes checking the wardrobe for the bodies of the 2 girls he hung there and it was disappeared and that mrs Wolfe helped clean up the apartment actually aligns with the movie's dark satire. This shows that mrs Wolfe does not want her apartments name to get bad and for her that is more important than the 2 girls lives . This scene just highlights the self-obsession and indifference of society. This could have been open ended with 2 theories . But for our disappointment both the writer of this novel from which this movie was adapted , Bret Easton Ellis , and the director Mary revealed that the murders are real , so this means that the 2nd theory was both the writer's and director's vision while writing and directing this film respectively. Simply , this film is an intriguing masterpiece constructed by Mary Harron's direction masterclass and the 🐐 Christian Bale's best acting of all time .
