MAN OF CINEMA
I really loved the choice of the camera work director adopted for the film.
It is a handheld, simple and raw approach, the one which is usually known as "avant-garde". but for the audience It feels like we were watching the POV of the ghost of the dead sister. I am not kidding, just watch the film thinking that and you will get fucking chills. The camera is always lurking behind someone's shoulder, or in the corner, or from top angles of the building, it just feels like someone is standing there. And the way the story unfolds, this Cinematography really elevates that tension, mood and drama.
It's a perfect blend of tragedy and comedy that comes out of miserable situations. And it comes out of a place where you least expected. That's what makes it more effective, and it's just not one blow. Once the cat is out of the bag, it will cause chaos that leaves you in deep shock and disgust.
Thomas Vinterberg brilliant showcases the trauma of childhood abuse in these grown characters and how fucked up each on of them because of that. And most importantly he captures the denial very well. When christian makes the first toast, everyone is in shock for a second but quickly they resume to enjoy the feast denying the naked ugly truth. Its a perfect depiction of denial nature exists in most families.
It's just a brilliant film from start to end, it keeps peaking scene after scene, It's hard to achieve that consistent elevation of intense drama one scene after the other, and this movie successfully does that.
