MAN OF CINEMA
A Dystopian fable of Hope and faith in humanity.
This is one of those very rare films which combines Science, faith, politics and reality into a perfect blend. Cuarón created a world which was hopeless, inhumane and brutal. We often attribute hope to the future, but when there is zero chance of the future generation then every thing had meaning on earth becomes meaningless and chooses destruction over peace. Cuarón uses so many metaphors and different themes in so many scenes that when you understand those little things, this film comes across as much more layered. As mentioned above Cuarón uses infertility as a metaphor to tell that hope is dead in this world, and to have the peace in this chaos there must be faith which should rise to awake these humans. Cuarón uses Christianity and spirituality very cleverly, we see when Theo asks kee who is her father, kee says she is virgin( indicating virgin mary), we see when other people see the baby, they say christ name and do cross sign. We also see Jasper yell Shanti shanti, when he sees Kee pregnant. Shanti means peace, he felt this child will finally bring that peace to the world. The film also depicts the horrors of concentration camps, occupied areas, labeling people as outsiders, reignite memories of nazi era and in a way it also symbolises the situation of Palestine occupied by Israel. We also rebel uprising in the end. The whole final setup reminded me of gaza, and its just devastating. But that whole final sequence was so surreal to watch, suddenly the Cinematography of the film changes to Cinéma vérité, a very documentary style, we see blood splashing on camera lens and it stays there very long, following the character at every movement and the whole sequence feels like captured in one shot. It's hardcore, emotional and intense. The film never really gives out an explanation about the cause of infertility in detail also it doesn't talk much about the ship of tomorrow, it all leaves to the audience to make their own conclusions and assumptions, which is very clever. Even at the point where the film ends, the question of hope and peace is still uncertain and in a way it will always be uncertain because humans are bound to live despair and they are capable of both kindness and killing and hence the conflict will live on as long as humanity exists.
