MAN OF CINEMA
Hirokazu Kore-eda knows how to make movies with darker themes surrounding
children which affects social conscience, and makes us reflect on sympathy and nurturing values towards human beings, especially kids. We see 4 abandoned kids, when their mother finally leaves them in a tiny apartment on their own and flees from her responsibility. Now the kids just have each other and the older brother Akira takes initiative and looks after them, but soon it all crumbles down on one extremely hot day in tokyo, when tragic struck the family. Kore-eda manages to project child innocence as well as their other matured emotions such as hunger, desire and love in a very nuanced way. The whole film was shot in a naturalistic way, at times it became too disturbing, especially that scene with yuki. Raising kids in this capitalist cruel world is a great task and it requires more than just money from their parents, this we understand from the other child Saki, who hails from a rich family but looks depressed and grieving, and not at all interested in any other things. This all shows parenting more than just giving birth to a child, childhood of children are most important, because it shapes their future. And here we see these kids burdened by things they shouldn't have worried about in that age. A lost childhood, loss of love & affection. All they had was each other and grim hope which was fading away as we see in the last scene. That last scene just leaves us filled with sorrow and worrying about their future. Its perfectly crafted traumatic drama that affects our conscience.
